Spotty Liver Disease Epidemiology
This project identified key risk factors for Spotty Liver Disease outbreak.
In this project, egg farms across Australia participated in three surveys. The participants provided a lot of information about their flocks including details on biosecurity, management, performance and health. The researchers analysed the differences and similarities in flocks that broke out with Spotty Liver Disease and those that didn't. Based on their analyses they found:
- Scratch areas are a sufficient cause for SLD if the C. hepaticus is present.
- Tunnel ventilation may provide some protection against an SLD outbreak through more effective temperature control.
- Stocking hens at below 112 birds per m2 of nest space may decrease risk of SLD in naturally ventilated sheds.
- Flocks coming into lay a week late should be monitored for signs of SLD.
